Small business grants 101: where to actually start

If you're new to grants, the landscape looks messier than it is. Here's the short version.

Three buckets

1. Federal — SBIR/STTR for R&D, USDA for rural or agricultural work, and agency-specific programs. Larger awards, longer timelines.
2. State and local — economic development offices, workforce boards, and city-level programs. Smaller checks, faster decisions.
3. Private and corporate — foundations, corporate foundations, and pitch-style competitions. Highly variable, often industry-specific.

What to prepare before you apply

• A one-paragraph description of what you do and who you serve.
• Your entity type, EIN, NAICS code, and headcount.
• A short budget: what you'd spend the money on and why.
• Any relevant certifications (women-owned, veteran-owned, minority-owned, HUBZone).

Common mistakes

• Applying to grants you don't qualify for "just in case".
• Ignoring reporting requirements — some grants are more work than they're worth.
• Skipping local programs to chase big federal awards.

Start local, prove you can execute and report, then scale up.
